A Canada Goose parka is an investment, and it’s built very differently from an everyday puffer. That’s why cleaning one costs more. At Luna Dry Cleaning, a high-end down coat costs $80 to clean, compared with $45 for a regular down coat. Here’s where the difference comes from.
Which coats count as premium parkas?
We’re talking about heavy, high-fill down parkas from brands like Canada Goose, Moncler, Moose Knuckles, Nobis, Arc’teryx and Woolrich. They’re built for real cold, which is exactly what makes them harder to clean well.
Why they take more time and care
- More down. Premium parkas have a higher fill weight, so there’s more down to clean and dry evenly.
- Heavy shells. Water-resistant shell fabrics like Canada Goose’s Arctic Tech are built to keep water out, which also makes them slower to clean and dry.
- Extra parts. Removable fur or shearling ruffs, reflective details and branded patches each need separate handling.
- Slow drying. After cleaning, the down has to be dried slowly and fully re-lofted so it doesn’t clump, mildew or lose warmth. A full-length parka can take much longer to dry than a lightweight puffer.
The price reflects the labour, specialized products and drying time needed to keep your coat warm and looking new.
What happens if it isn’t dried properly
Down that’s left damp clumps together. Clumped down leaves cold spots, and moisture trapped inside a heavy shell can lead to mildew and odours. Even when a parka looks dry on the outside, the down inside may still be wet. That’s the part that takes time, and the part that’s hardest to get right at home.
How often to clean a premium parka
Most parkas only need a full clean once a season, usually at the end of winter before you store it. Clean it sooner if it has a stain, especially makeup or oil on the collar and cuffs, which gets harder to remove the longer it sits. Between cleanings, hang it to air out and let it dry fully after wet days.
